Peggy complained to Don about Joan being harassed by another employee. She expected him to fix the problem. Don suggested that Peggy should fire the employee who was harassing Joan. If Don didn’t, then the staff would view her as a tattletale, and lose respect for her. While you don’t necessarily need to fire the employee to fix a problem, sometimes you can ask for help. However, to be respected as a leader, you must show that you are capable of handling any situation that may arise.

Peggy’s advice for Pete Campbell is a great example of what everyone should do in business (and life). Everybody makes mistakes, even CEOs and managers. Your ability to accept responsibility for your actions is what makes you a leader. You can’t solve a problem unless you are willing to take responsibility for it. Your customers and employees will appreciate your honesty, willingness to solve problems and willingness.

It’s not always easy to fix every situation. Although Henry Francis was talking about a government project, he did so to Betty, Don’s later wife. But it still makes sense. If all else fails, you can always buy yourself more time. Good leaders will not settle for the fastest solution to a problem.

“I have a life and it only leads in one direction: forward.” Don Draper (Season 1, Episode 5).

Don was talking about his personal situation when he said it to his brother. However, the sentiment holds true when we talk about careers. Don’s past was not the best. But he made a decision to move on and create a new identity. He then worked his way up in business and life. It is easy to get bogged down in the past, especially when you have made a mistake. But, to succeed, you must keep looking ahead and move forward. Good leaders know this and encourage others to look ahead instead of dwelling on the past.
